    Hello,
I came across a 6'3" Everett grand.  The serial # stamped on the plate in the usual place indicates that this piano was built in 1975. The cabinet and action style and general appearance indicate a much older instrument.  I couldn't find any other serial # anywhere else, like on the key slip or end of the key frame, etc.  Piano was "refinished" in the late 1990s.  Attached are a couple pictures of some of the Schwander action.  Any helpful ideas about the age of this instrument?

    Thanks in advance.

    Gary,

    Here's a long shot.

In the Pierce Piano Atlas, 12th Edition, there is a reference in Everett Piano Co. that says "Everett also produced Cable-Nelson pianos".
Following that lead, there is a reference in Cable-Nelson that says, "Some (other name) pianos were made in the Cable-Nelson factory in the 1960s with Everett cast in the plate".

Allowing for the practice of other piano names having been made with Everett cast in the plate could place that piano's date at 1951 using the Cable-Nelson numbers.

(Since you indicated this particular piano was refinished, I conclude you found no trace of a name on the fall board.)

    That's about it from me.

Or, it may have been built by Yamaha, as they acquired the name in 1973 and Pierce says that there were a few grands built in Japan that bears the name Everett.

Those Yamaha Everetts are actually quite nice. I only have one in my clientele, but it is a pleasure to work on. Basically a Yammy with an Everett on the plate and fall board. ------------------------------------------- Patrick Draine Billerica MA 978-663-9690 -------------------------------------------

But, I have never seen a repetition like this one with the extra lever (knuckle) on top between the jack and the hammer.  Schwander action, old style keybed, pedal lyre, etc.  Not a 1970's construction.

    Gary,

I'll agree with you on that one. I too have never seen an action with an extra lever like that. Almost looks like ... uh, never mind.

Anyhow, the closest I've come to a somewhat similar arrangement is the following:
