If "setting the temperament" is establishing the personality or flavor
of the scale, how about "laying the bearings" with bearings being the
    foundation?

    Hi,
during my classes I try to explain each temperament as as a different way to divide the octave.
Try to imagine a real stairway made of 12 steps of eventually different heights ....
    Best regards,

Another way to explain the need for "temperament" -- to explain why the intervals cannot be perfect -- is by analogy to the revolutions of the earth around the sun and the moon around the earth. It would be mathematically convenient if there were exactly 12 months per solar year, but it is not so -- therefore we have developed a way to adapt the length of each month so that the year comes out right. There have been different ways to parse out the months, in different calendar systems, but they all try to adhere to a precise length of year. The calendar systems are like different temperaments that all try to make the octave (the "year") come true.

    Wim,

If being in tune means pure intervals and in 12 tone equal temperament NO intervals are pure, then setting a temperament is what I've called for years "controlled mistuning".

    Hi Conrad, still have Flamesuits?

Isn't the temperament a means to divide an octave, hence so many thru the years as thirds width changed.
