    All,

I'm restringing a C7 (c.1979) and don't have a stringing scale for it. Does anyone have a scaling they would like to share? Have you found you could improve what's there? I have a new computer and no stringing program yet.

    Thanks!

I should mention that this is a 20 note bass. What's currently on the piano goes from 18.5 (American) to 13. Seems like it should be 20 to 14 or so.

I'm certain these are original strings.

Looks like I may need to buy PScale, again... Unless one of you has the scale on your computer already.

    Thanks.

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

I've got a Yamaha C7E I am about to restring, and could provide you with the scaling (in metric sizes, as indicated on the bridge by Yamaha). It is from 1989. Is the C7 you are doing an "E", or a "D" or ???

I'm using Scale Ripper (free download) to do some scale analysis.  There's lots it doesn't tell you, but you can at least get a look at your string tensions.

I found a link to the program on the Fandrich & Sons website.  Here it is:

    Thanks Floyd,

I got another copy of pscale and checked what was on the piano. It cannot be improved upon. You know, I tried to get on scale ripper but could never get it to work. Tremaine does a great job with pscale and I guess I'm used to its quirks, but I'll give Ripper another try.

    Best,

    Jim

Post it. I'm sure the world would like to see the perfect C7 scale.

    Ron,

The program I used (PScale) showed a nice curve at the center (between the lines) of the tension and inharmonicity lines. Every time I moved a wire to see what would happen it went off that curve and beyond the lines as seen in Tremaine's parameters. Maybe not "perfect" but what would you prefer to see? Indeed, for that piano given the lengths and tensions, I couldn't see how I could improve on it by simple changing wires sizes.

Redesign the bridge? Of course I could do that. Add a transition bridge. Yes too. But barring some other changes tell me what you would do only with the wire sizes? Or are you just trolling me?

Cannot be improved on by Pscale's criteria, is accurate.

The older C7 scale was lighter: F21(old) 61.75 inches long with #18.5 wire The newer one is F21(new) 61.0 inches long with # 19.5 wire, only 3/4 inch. The newer one sounds so much better. Wouldn’t the improvement on an old C7 be worth it, even if it weren’t perfect?
