I recently bought an LED battery powered work light, NEBO Workbrite, that I really love. 20 LED bulbs (bright!) on the face, plus 6 on the end as an alternative, and a magnetic base that allows you to aim it where you want to. The magnet could be stronger - I need to find a way to beef that up - but otherwise a real winner..

That's nice. I had a #5618, same page, that put out an ideal amount of
light, but the pocket clip guaranteed that you couldn't set the thing
down with the light pointed anywhere you needed it - ever. With the clip
cut off, and an adjustable base of some sort, and your own invention, it
could be a good one as well.

Yes- I'm glad you mentioned this Fred. I just bought one that sounds exactly like what you describe. the fully directional pivoting, ability to place at extreme angles, and the brightness as you mentioned, are VERY IMPRESSIVE. I think I paid about 5 or 6 bucks for it at my favorite appliance parts store. (I had to put a drum bearing in our 30 year old dryer again--the previous one lasted about 19 years. who needs a &1500 Samsung!)

    All,

When all the other flashlights I have fail to give me the light I need, I resort to the

    LEDLENSER Headlamp H7.2

I haven't used it much, but when I do, it never fails to deliver. It is especially nice when installing Dampp-Chaser systems.

    Thanks, James.

My first try was to use some magnets that I have from K&J, a bunch of 1/16 x 1/8 x 1" (I got a pack of 25 of those a few years back), putting them on the face of the existing magnet, then inserting them behind. No luck. But I have ordered some disc magnets to experiment with. The existing one has a lip/flange on it to hold it in the base, and is just over 11/16" wide in the exposed part (probably metric, but K&J does inches). So I ordered 11/16, 3/4, 7/8 and 1" to try out various things, from a larger behind and a smaller in the hole in the base, to possibly having a large one (the 1") on the bottom, becoming the base. I imagine something will work.

I'd love to have it able to hold onto an upright plate, which it doesn't quite do now.

I got my magnets from K&J, and found that installing a 3/4" inside and 11/16" in the hole, glued together with CA, does the trick. It holds beautifully, vertical or horizontal. I just have to remember to keep it separate from my computer and iPad.

I like to shine light at a fairly acute, controlled angle for grand let off and voicing. The light casts shadows from the strings on the hammer surface, that approach the string laterally as the hammer approaches the the string vertically, giving a refined look at distance for let off (and much easier to see than trying to judge gap distance straight on without shadows). And it makes shadows where the string indentations are on the hammer surface for hammers that have been filed, for surface voicing. So having a bright, portable, adjustable angle light source is a real boon.

I'm a big fan of the Craftsman LED Pocket Light in place of a pocket flash light.  It's a lot more useful in my view (than a flashlight that is), as you can lay it down on strings, in an action, or in the keybed.  A flashlight is too directional for piano technician purposes, in my view.  It also has a magnet on it's base that's strong enough to stand on a plate vertically or horizontally.  It's not a replacement for a bigger worklight as you might have in a shop, but it's definitely a handy light to keep in your kit.

As an added bonus, it's cheap!

I don't know the brand, but I bought an LED head-lamp that's directional with 3 settings of brightness and even a red light. I don't know why I would use a red light unless in a darkroom for photo development. I use it on dimly lit stages so the hot stage lights don't need to be on. especially good for seeing the jack to knuckle alignment.

My wife and I were browsing through a Big Lots store some time back and my eye was drawn to a head lamp with the Energizer name on it.  I couldn't resist the closeout price.  It has a single LED but very bright, clips on my eyeglasses and is perfect for getting screwdriver onto the screw slot of a vertical hammer flange.  Takes up very little space in my small kit (uses nickel-sized battery rather than AAA's). Its one drawback is that it is not comfortable to leave clipped on for more than a few minutes (pushes against my nose).  And unfortunately, the Energizer headlamps Google brings up are much larger strap-on units.  So it certainly must have been a closeout.

In stead of the 5 x 40watt fluorescent tube strip lights in my workshop I would like to hear of any 'larger' light source than the LED Fred is talking of to replace them. Any ideas? Oddly enough the fluorescent  lights are not as bright as one would think - and they tend to Hum.m.m.m..m.   But here are no shadows. Michael (UK)

I've seen strips of LEDs, labeled for under kitchen cabinets and the like, with a cord and a plug. I have been thinking of getting a couple to try as alternatives to the fluorescents, but haven't done it yet.  Here's one.  Somewhat pricey, but if the light output is good, and they last essentially forever, worth it.

As part of our recent office renovations, we installed flat-panel LEDs, and are
very pleased with them.  They were about $100 each, but have no hot spots,
give off very clean bright light without glare, no noise, and cost almost nothing
to run.  Well worth it.  Each one is the size of a ceiling tile.

Ruth.. Tell us where you got them.... Re light strips... I bought an led fixture with bright white LEDs for 29.00 at lowes. I can use it in the field or mount it under the cabinet over my computer desk using heavy duty Velcro or a plate and magnet system. I was in a tractor supply store and picked up a cool led light that you can press a button on to light one large led on the end or double press and turn on a bank of 20 LEDs. Runs off small batteries and has a clip you can attach to a belt or belt loop. At also has a magnet but it needs to be stronger. I have more flashlights, strip lights LEDs than I have tools. ------------------------------------------- James Kelly Pawleys Island SC 843-325-4357 -------------------------------------------

I just bought a 4 ft LED shop light at Lowes, $70. Very nice. Just like a 2 fluorescent unit but brighter. And no bulb to change - 35,000 hours rated. Hung it with the same chain and hooks from the fluorescent I replaced.

I was in Home Depot a couple days ago, and noticed this flashlight by Energizer. Of course I had to get one. Nice design. It has a panel that will light up a space, like an action cavity or plate web (when a performance hall is entirely dark, for instance), a nice directional bright LED that pivots and dims, and a built in tripod stand.

I still like the NEBO one (brighter, for one thing), but mine seems to have a current leak. In a couple weeks I find the batteries dead, so I have to remove one to keep that from happening. Which means I have to reinstall that battery every time I use it. The added earth magnet does make it stick firmly to any steel/iron surface, but that doesn't help me aim the light across the tops of hammers for voicing purposes (to see the grooves when they are subtle), unless I bring along a metal base of some sort. I guess there is some drawback to just about every design.

Anyway, you can't possibly have enough flashlights ;-)

Looks good Fred. Ready available and affordable--which is very helpful.  I also want to mention this while we are at it, I have had some really good luck with these little round lights from Sylvania called "Dot it H20"   I picked one up at like Walmart one time while filing a V-bar (one also cannot have too many little mirrors also). This little Sylvania has been in my tool kit for like 4 years now, and I like NEVER have to replace the batteries they last so long. These have a little manget on the back that is plenty for sticking it on a plate strut to see damper felts, etc, etc. It has 3 LED lights and it was only like 5 bucks.

For a brighter light, and one that fits nicely in my back pocket while working,-- I also LOVE my new mini MAG light. they are not cheap like the older ones (10 bucks) , but they are brighter, and again, the battery life is PRIMO! (They are like $24)

    - and like it. There's a magnet on the back (which came unglued)...you supply the batteries...
    it is plenty bright.

Fred's looks even better, but the price!!!...I could get 7 units from Harbor Freight for that
and illuminate the whole insides of a grand action cavity!

I would love it more if it had those props like yours, Fred.

Richard, Looks like a pretty good little find! This is very similar to the Sylvania one I mentioned. If this China Freight one can handle all the hard knocks, and if the magnet works well, etc--looks like a good deal. I think we should all have something like this, AND the one Fred mentioned, AND definitely a Mini Mag.          #(hashtag) TOOLjunkiesANONYMOUS

I've had one of these in my tool case for at least a couple of years. It
puts out plenty of light but, yes, a prop would be nice. As for the
magnet, I've never found a use for the magnet on any flashlight - so
far. I carried a mini Mag light for many years, but it got bumped by an
LED flashlight using one AA battery, that puts out a LOT more light. No
brand, and my wife doesn't remember where she bought it (Christmas
stocking stuffer), but it's sure impressive.

Yeah--I meant the NEW Mini Mags. They are a little longer for some reason, still use the 2 AA batts, and put out TONS more light! And batteries last like 10 times longer. And for some reason mine seems much more dependable than the old ones that were like 10 bucks. I guess it's all about the new LED technology. But these are now about 24.99 so not "cheap" but for a light that fits handy in your back pocket-it's the best 25 I have spent in a WHILE.

I have an Energizer brand led that straps to my head and can be aimed. three white settings led's and a red light?  Don't know what that's for unless I worked in a photography dark room.  It's on original batteries from 4 years ago. OK, I don't use it that much, but invaluable when I need it!
