I know its not much but maybe some techs can find a piano for this fellow and his family at some point down the road. I am sure there are many others who lost pianos as well. I have had to deal with a number of customers here who lost their pianos in floods . The impacts of these storms is devastating and many, many people will suffer forms of PTSD the rest of their lives.   There is really not much hope for an instrument that has been submerged like the one in the video. I was hopeful but doubtful when we got a Baldwin acro out of a foot of water. After the case dried out many other things went south- the base strings all went dead, bridges became loose, back posts lost glue bond, soundboard buckled and cracked, bottom board cracked etc. Some of us may be called in to inspect flooded pianos so be prepared to break bad news. The Australian Piano Technicians Guild has an excellent fact sheet that lays out what to expect and how to respond. Breaking news to someone that their piano is damaged beyond repair is no easy task .

I remember looking over a piano in a Mormon church with a water line about 7 inches up. A few bass strings and it lived, more or less. I don't think that this piano will be so lucky. The water is a lot deeper, and it might have been a few days before it ran away.

A newly arrived doctoral student at our school needed a piano to practice on at his apartment, just as an alum donated a Conover grand which we shuttled his way. This student had decided not to bring his personal piano to L. A. due to the expense involved, even though he will likely be here for the next three years. So, one day we were making arrangements to move the Conover, and he was waxing about how much he loved his 2006 Steinway B back home, and the next day he shared that said piano is no more. He hails from Houston. Poor guy.

The man in the video, Aric Harding, is the son of our colleague and friend, Claude Harding. The piano has been removed, and Claude and Lynne will have a house full of grandkids as cleanup begins for his son's family. I will post an update from Claude in a new thread.

That is unbelievable. What are the odds of something like that ?  It was a random video until now . I live too far from Texas to do anything directly but let me know what types of things members here can do to help . In the days and weeks ahead there will be many, many needs that will unfold. Much of the aid and relief in this area came from private organizations, churches, clubs, stores and volunteers, mission groups etc. Because news disappears from the headlines and tv does not mean the problems have. There will be a need for many things such as personal hygiene items, wash cloths, soaps, toothpaste, shoes, clothing etc.

I would be willing to put together some type of drive here so that we could get some specific things for the Hardings and their family, friends, neighbors. Its time for the country to unite and get it done.

Here is a way to help this family. If the goal is met, still give.  Aric will know best how to support those around him.

As a flood victim myself last year, I can say that the GoFundMe page is by far the best way to help that specific family.

We were able to do mini-rebuilds to save a couple of uprights that had had minimal (6 inches or less for not more than a couple hours) depth of water, but anything much deeper than that started to fall apart because of how long it sat in the water.

Although I may be mistaken, I thought I saw in the news that the musician Vanessa Carlton had instigated a discussion with Yamaha to have a piano donated to Mr. Harding. Will be interested to know if and when that does happen..it would be a silver lining in what seems a dreadful situation for them...
