About a month ago I replaced the h/s/f on a 7'6" Bosendorfer belonging to a retired piano professor and his piano playing wife. Last week I came back to touch up the voicing and tuning, and they invited my wife and me to a small recital this evening in their condo. What I thought would be a small intimate gathering of just a few people wound up to be a sit down recital with 10 other people, complete with printed program.

Paul, the professor, introduced me to the audience before the program started, and pointed to the bottom of the program, which stated: "honoring Willem Blees, Technician extraordinaire who brought our piano back to life".

Afterwards he proclaimed he considers me to be the top technician in Hawaii.  I'm not sure I would go that far, but it's nice to know my work is appreciated. Not only that, but I got two appointments out of it, including one piano teacher who owns 2 Boseys. She wants me to evaluate her pianos and talk about what needs to be done.

Anyway, it was a very productive evening.

    Very cool Wim!

When I tuned for George Winston a few years ago, he personally thanked me in front of the 2000 person audience at the Lied Center in Lincoln.  I never got one phone call for tunings however.  It was neat to get a thanks from a top performer in front of the crowd! Super nice guy. Being a CAUT has some nice perks.

It's always nice to get recognition.

I'm hopeful, in my lifetime, to start to see more credit for our efforts on recordings, in the Playbill for live shows, etc. I have a dream..

I just read Part 2 of this series in the Journal, and I believe this is
a very important contribution to our base of knowledge, for anyone who
    tunes or rebuilds pianos.

Bridge termination problems are often the weakest link in the tone of
even the finest pianos, and this information clarifies what is really
happening and what we can and should do about it. Increasing our
understanding in this area could eventually help move the piano industry
forward to find and use bridge cap materials that are harder and less
hygroscopic, along with more abrasion-resistant bridge pins.

Thanks, Ron, for sharing this with us.

I've asked Mark Purney (privately) to repost what is basically a new thread, regarding Ron Nossaman's PTJ articles about false beats.  This in order to both be able to search for discussion in the future, as well as giving Wim Blees his moment.  If anyone feels compelled to weigh in on these articles before Mark has the chance (or inclination) to re-post, I hope you will take the initiative to copy his post into a new, appropriately titled thread (like: Nossaman on False Beats in PTJ 2016-4 & 5) for everyone's sake.

    Thanks

    Hi David,

I actually did type in an appropriate heading in the subject line to
create a new thread, but somehow that got overridden. I'm not sure how,
but possibly because I sent the message via email and not from the website.

My apologies for the confusion. From now on, I will try to remember to
log in to the website when creating a new topic.

    Regards,
    Mark

    Mark,
A good hard cap that is minimally reactive to humidity swings is all it
would take. Abrasion of the pins would not be a problem if the cap
wasn't constantly scrubbing the string up and down them.

We worked all this out on the old Pianotech list 19 years ago in April
1997. I've gone through it many times since, and in every bridge and
belly class I've ever taught. The Journal was my last chance to try to
make it common knowledge. I sure hope it works.

Maybe you should put Technician Extraordinaire on your business card and web site. You deserve it!

There are those few rare times when a fine pianist or performer or director thanks you for your service to his or her piano.
That doesn't pay your rent or mortgage but it makes you feel like you selected a worthwhile trade, although it is still a "job".
But then again, any occupation in which one has to work to make some money is a job, if it wasn't it would be a hobby.

Thank you for sharing your experience. At least you and your wife had a nice night out at no expense, thanks to your good work.

    Congratulations,

    Bob
