It's a condition called tinnitus, and WWJ' Dr. Deanna Lites reports a new treatment may provide relief.

University of Michigan researchers say an external device that uses precisely timed sounds and weak electrical pulses to target unruly nerve activity in the brain can quiet the sounds associated with tinnitus.

In the study participants got either the real device or a fake device to use for 30 minutes a day for a month. The sham treatment didn't provide relief.

As for the real device, researcher Dr. Susan Shore said, "It helped their tinnitus…As a group, it made their tinnitus significantly less loud, and it made their tinnitus significantly less bothersome."

More studies are planned and researchers are looking for participants.

Recruitment for the next clinical trial will begin in early 2018, with the trial expected to start in late summer. Information will be posted on www.clinicaltrials.gov six months before the start of the trial. To learn more about the study now, send an email to tinn.trial@umich.edu.

Thanks Larry, I'll check it out.

When my tinnitus rings I just answer. Mine may have been from loud music in my classroom, where I taught ten classes a day for 30 years.
I was alway told tinnitus generates in the brain and since I don't have a brain where else does it come from? I never used at a chainsaw, mower, leaf blower, snow blower or carpenter saw without wearing shooter ear plugs. If I concentrate, a rare thing for me, I hear the very soft high pitched ringing. Not nearly as loud as my C or A tuning fork rings.

I've seen ads for a tinnitus blocking device for sale at hearing aid audiologist offices in my area. They don't say what it will cost. $$$$

My audiologist, who told me there is no cure for tinnitus, asked if the high pitched ring keeps me awake at night and if I have trouble hearing  pitches? My answer was no, and I didn't mention that I tune pianos.
She then tested my hearing with a high tech. program that took about fifteen minutes. When finished she said, "OK Bob, you are normal." My reply was, "Thanks Heather, you are the first doctor to ever tell me I am normal." :-)

I guess many of us, with this condition that some piano tuners have, had no trouble ringing in the New Year.

Had tinnitus since the viet nam war.
fortunately that and hearing loss are a disability where the VA provides a
hearing aide device. Beyond helping me hear there is a built in option
that generates different background noises. Its a distraction from the
    buzzing that actually works.
But - after so much time has passed, its just part of me and I ignore it
the vast majority of the time without the device. I have only had the
device for about 6 or 7 years.
Prior to that the treatment was similar - I got first I-Pod and the
audiologist instructions were to download classical music that was devoid
of drama and play it at low volume - sort of like the background noise. It
helped in much the same way.
But accepting that there never will be silence eventually happened, that
was more of a cure than anything.

I've had it since age 12 when a firecracker went off to close to me. I am used to it and live with it, but I'm also interested in what I might do to prevent a worsening of the tinnitus or hearing in general. I've used a variety of earplugs while tuning. About three years ago I had custom musicians plugs made. The filter that works for me is the Etymotic ER-9. (I originally got the ER-15 but it attenuated too much.)

This is an an from the Alternatives newsletter by Dr. David Williams:

"Some years ago, researchers found that, by providing the proper antioxidants, cell death and subsequent permanent hearing loss can be prevented. The most effective compound...appears to be glutathione. NAC is one of the most economical and efficient compounds used to increase glutathione levels. Based on studies showing NAC can protect against noise-induced hear loss in animals, the military tested a "hearing pill" on recruits at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. The tests were so successful that the Navy patented the supplement combination. It is particularly beneficial in producing glutathione when taken with whey protein. I do consume whey but am now taking the NAC first, on an empty stomach.
If you take NAC (widely available in health food stores), you might be interested in a couple of things I just learned recently:

    (1) "... take [NAC] apart from food in order to get the greatest absorption. If you take NAC with food, your absorption of it goes down as proteins compete for absorption in the intestines."

    (2) Among another of touted benefits, NAC provides a significant energy boost.

I take 600 mg. twice daily, one first thing when I get up and the second one around mid-day before lunch, both times on an empty stomach. My personal perception is that my ears are less sensitive to loud noises than they were before I began taking NAC.

Here's an article about NAC and tinnitus:

And finally, another article on other health benefits of NAC:

In addition to NAC, a couple of other supplements I take regularly with the hope that my hearing is benefiting, magnesium and vinpocetine.

About 80% of people are deficient in magnesium. Since learning about the health its many benefits about two years ago, I've become a fan of it. I've put together some good information about it and am happy to share it. Send me a private message if you want it. BTW, I don't sell anything!
