    Hello all,

For some strange reason, I enjoy rebushing parts. Keys, flanges, I like it all, and am thinking to extend this service to other technicians.

I was wondering if you all think this would be a good opportunity to expand my business? Would you or anyone you know be interested in possibly outsourcing your key and/or flange bushings?

I guess I'm trying to determine if there's a market for rebushing action parts.  What are y'all's thoughts?

    Thanks,

    You must be weird!  πŸ˜β˜ΊπŸ˜…πŸ€£

How much would you charge to rebush a complete set of Steinway upright flanges?

Thanks! I'll take that as a compliment!

Which flanges are you thinking of? Hammer butt flanges, damper flanges, wippen flanges, jack flanges? All of the above?

As far as price, I'm still trying to determine a fair one. I have an estimate on how long it will take, so let me contact you privately when I'm ready to start, probably next week or so.

If anyone wants to, I can make a list, add your name to it, and contact you when I'm open for the rebushing aspect of my business. Please contact me privately to be added.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll keep being weird 'til the blue moon comes,

Until the blue moon comes? That's not very long - Per Wikipedia:

blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar. A Full Moon occurs roughly every 29.5 days and on the rare occasions when the Full Moon falls at the very beginning of a month there is a good chance a Blue Moon will occur at the end of the month. According to this definition the next Blue Moon will occur on January 31, 2018.

You might want to rebush a lot of flanges in the next few months if you expect to make some money from your new departure by your self-imposed deadline...  :-) ;-) πŸ˜

    Benjamin,

Is it possible that you actually wrote, "…when pigs fly," but the darn overly-agressive spell-check decided that what you had intended was, "…blue moon," (as in, "once in a…")?

Hmm... Maybe I should have written "till pigs fly"... unfortunately I know of an airplane called "the Flying Swine"...

    Benjamin,

You're only about 30 years too late. Back in the 1980s it was hard to get decent parts anywhere. Steinway was selling it's rejects and after market parts were few and low quality. There were technicians who were rebushing flanges out of self defense; that was the only option, if you wanted a decent part. We're blessed these days to have excellent parts from multiple sources.

There might still be a limited market for rebushing services, given the current interest in "repurposing" things. There's a certain appeal to that, but not much if any monetary saving to the customer.

    Richard,

There must be a market for repurposing things; ask any rebuilder. One can buy a new piano for cheaper than rebuilding the old one in most cases; yet we still have rebuilders. I suppose my market would consist largely of rebuilders who hate to rebush.

    Benjamin,

The only reason to recondition piano parts that makes economic sense these days is if identical parts or close-enough substitutes are not readily available from suppliers. That would be true for some old American pianos and for a lot of European pianos (you should see some of the weird action configurations I come across here in Israel - I've had to modify parts from my stock by carving and whittling to make some workable replacements). Otherwise it just makes no sense in terms of cost or time. We did recondition old parts when I was at SF State, when there was no budget for supplies - but we got usable old  parts from a local rebuilder who would otherwise toss them. Since we were on salary, and we did have slack times - it was worthwhile for us to do it ourselves - but obviously, there was no budget to pay a contractor... We rebuilt a couple actions that way...

    Susan,

Wouldn't be opposed to doing the double ones, but they'd cost extra (it is twice the work).
