I have a key bushing job coming up and I was wondering about the practice of using cauls to size the mortises after the old bushings are removed.

Do you do it? Any special procedures? Is it simply a matter of inserting cauls immediately after old bushings are removed? Special cauls available from?

    thanks,
    Aaron

Dale Irwin sells the Spurlock cauls.  You need to talk to him about which size you need. (They are not all the same size).

    Mortise sizing cauls, highly recommended.
Get them in while the mortises are still damp and let them dry overnight.

You do need the appropriate width of sizing caul for the mortise. I have only purchased the set for the standard American .146 -.147" pin, but depending what pianos you usually work on, you might need more sizes. They need to be over the pin size by two thicknesses of the bushing felt you will be using, more or less (bushing cloth varies a bit within size, and measurement varies depending on the pressure applied).
