  • 1.  Grand Damper Wire Screws: Replacements for Missing and Damaged Screws

    Posted 09-13-2017 11:45
    Hi,

Does anyone know of a source for replacement damper wire screws.  Schaff recommends replacing the damper block in an upright action and I suppose the top flange in a grand action.  PianoTek does not carry or stock replacement screws.

    Thanks

I just salvaged a bag full from some grands that I trashed. How many you want?

Look in the Schaff catalogue under damper bushings.  I've used these to repair damper levers when the screw broke off during disassembly.  The screws for these fittings are also listed separately as catalogue # 518s.

If all you want is the screw, take a sample to a good hardware store like Ace or True Value. Look in the small grey boxes above the bulk bolt and screws.

I've used the brass rail repair clip screws, from Schaff.

While I could with a knee-jerk reaction mark this query as inappropriate, it would spare all from an explanation that is warranted.

It should be unequivocally understood over-tightening damper screws to prevent losing them or any other lack of reason like proper regulation of dampers, is damper wire abuse. I affirm that this social media site and others make the risk of losing a damper screw no greater than letting a single solitary ant crawling across your floor live.

LOL. You remind me of an experience removing grand dampers on an old grand which didn't have the brass inserts, just bare wood. Instead, person or persons unknown had tightened the screws (larger than the ones we are used to) and put nice curves into the wires. What an interesting experience!

How many do you need, and what flavor piano?
