Hi Susan,
The "O" was first, from about 1900 to 1923 in the US, and continuously in Hamburg. the"L" went from 1923 to 2006 in the US, after which the "O" replaced the "L." They share the same string scale. Early "O's" had fixed sostenuto tabs, earliest had no rear aliquots.
They should be considered interchangeably in the marketplace.
All technicians should own the Kehl/Kirkland "The Official Guide to Steinway Pianos", a very cheap source of complete info about Steinway models and scales.
Regards,
Bill

Subject: Steinway question
Hello, all ... I'm doing an appraisal of a Steinway L, fair market value and also replacement (list) price. Since they don't make L's anymore, I'm thinking of going with the O list price, as being the closest comparable model available new. Is this a reasonable way to deal with the issue? Can anyone tell me when Steinway stopped making the L model? <thanks>
