Greetings distinguished colleagues. A local PAC has asked for my help in identifying a PSO with no name or serial to be found. It does however have one feature unique enough that someone on this list might remember seeing one before and have more of an idea who built it. Endlessly inventive folks those manufacturers. Thanks in advance for any help in solving the mystery.

If they decide to put it down I want the wing and keyboard it is attached to. It looks like a trophy glued to the plate. There was a piano company called Wing and Son which sold direct from the factory. They are known for a 5 pedal upright and I know of one. Maybe this is one of their grands...

Kudos to James Kelly for hunting down pretty conclusive evidence that the grand in question is indeed a Wing & Son.

I might have bad news Mr. Roeder,
I have a wing and sons catalog, I also have numerous factory photos, and I have the complete Wing and Sons history as told to Alison Scott by Lawrence Wing. In all of that stuff, there is not a single grand piano mentioned or a single one in any of the factory photos. All the diagrams, photos, and descriptions show uprights.

Interesting symbol though. Odd that it's a single wing. Suggests perhaps a fallen angel.  Possibly related to things like Daedalus who fell from the sky when the sun got too hot. Or Achilles who had a weakness. Or Even Schumann who injured his hands (a broken wing?).  Hopefully the mystery will get solved conclusively. Good luck.

I googled Wing & Sons and found this web site: http://antiquepianoshop.com/online-museum/wing-son/

It's a website of a rebuilder, Antique Piano Shop. Two grand pianos are mentioned in the publication Book of Complete Information about Pianos. And there are several other original publications. Very interesting.

Richard, Are sure that it wasn't upright grands? I believe they had 2 models by that name.

Karl, I would say it's still unverified since it has been seperated from the cast iron frame. I was left suspicious because the website says a Wing grand, and not a Wing and Sons grand.

Here's a screen shot of the introductory page. It clearly states Wing & Son.

.....and there is no Wing company listed in Pierce.
Thanks Mr. Roeder l appreciate the compliment. I'm just a history buff. Just found a fabulous copy of the west point history of the civil war. Love all the maps of the battle movements. 400 pages should keep me entertained a little while.

Is the West Point history a recent publication, or did it come out soon after the Civil War? Available at your local public library? Barnes & Noble?

Mr. West, I found this copy in an antique shop in Sweetwater, tn. It was published by Simon a Schuster 2014. I highly recommend it if that's your area of interest also.

Wing sold their pianos by mail order, much like Sears did. The Wing catalogs were superb productions. I collect piano literature, and have several. They were hard-cover, printed on slick paper with detailed, colored illustrations. One catalog included a darkened piece of heavy paper the viewer rolled into a cone shape to view the pictures. This supposedly gave an almost three-dimensional view of the pianos, the cases of which were highly elaborate. The most obvious feature if the uprights were their multiple pedals, one of which produced a reiterating effect using a secondary string striker.

It also seems clear from the publications that grands were not a big part of their business. Most of the pictures were of uprights. But they worked hard to get the word out about their company. The green copy is the 17th edition.

The 1911 publication shows one grand piano. The 1926 publication shows two.

Maybe Wing and Wing and Sons were two different companies.

    Also too.
Mr. Chernobieff I am once again amazed at your resources regarding 19th and early 20th century American piano making. Those folks were taking that pursuit of happiness thing seriously.
