I thought it was his talent and performance that netted him the top prize.  Huh.

Had the piano failed to deliver what he asked of it, it could have cost him the win.

But I take your point. As in the old story:  After a concert, a fan came up and said "Oh Mr. Heifetz, your violin sounds wonderful!" Heifetz picked up his violin, put it to his ear, and said "That's funny, I don't hear a thing."

I followed the competition fairly closely. It's my opinion that the Yamaha and the Fazioli were far more carefully prepared for this event than the Steinway ("We're No. 2, so we try harder.")
Of course it takes talent and hard work to be successful, but I believe that George Li's selection of the Steinway for the concerto in the finals (he placed 3rd.) cost him a trip to the International Competition in Warsaw in October.

Did you happen to notice if Li played either a NY or a Hamburg?

    Thanks.

    Kind regards.

    Paul,

So exactly how had the Steinway been ill prepared?
