Steinway   M   from 2003. Really decent condition. Same piano as in question #1.
Customer is complaining that some of the strings sound too bright and subsequently harsh when played a little on the loud side. What I am hearing is notes that are not necessarily too bright but which exhibit a couple of prominent high frequency partials that stick out when played on the loud side. Not partials we would normally want to hear out front. Not sympathetic string vibration from a note higher up. The annoying partial dies away quite quickly after a second or two. Hoping someone here will have some suggestions on what to try.

Bad winding or an agraffe problem has caused this problem for me in the past.

    Mr.Sykes,

could be that it's an L mode problem. Check out  James Arledge's website www.pianostrings.com  for a video about the problem and possible solution. Click on the Library tab and look at the bottom of the flow chart for longitudinal.

Thank you for this. Fascinating. And I believe that is exactly what I'm hearing. Looking forward to checking this out on customers piano.

    Try deep (10mm) shoulder needling.
