As I close out my books every year, I always like to re-evaluate where to spend my advertising dollars. I posted my results last year. This time I'll have post 2016 and 2017 figures.

Where did my new customers come from?

                                    2016           2017

    Word of mouth        73.2%          75%

    Internet                   11%              11.2%

    ptg.org only             0%                0.9%

    Car sign                   3.9%             2.6%

    Face to face             9.4%           10.3%

    Phone book              2.4%            0%

    Happy 2018,

    Very interesting statistic, John

Question about the internet. Is this your Facebook page or website? Or did the customer Google piano tuner, and you name came up?

The .9% from the PTG website, did that generate enough income to pay for your dues?

Time to drop the phone book ad????

    Wim,

    Sorry for the delay.

Q: Is this your Facebook page or website? Or did the customer Google piano tuner, and you name came up?
A: The customer Googled my name. I do not have a business FB page.

Q: The .9% from the PTG website, did that generate enough income to pay for your dues?
A: I get about 1 new customer a year via the PTG website. After 3-5 years of tuning my PTG new customers' pianos, I start making more money per year than the cost of my dues.

Q: Time to drop the phone book ad????
A: Yes! I have stopped all phone book ads except in my immediate local area.

    Good questions,
    JP

    Great stuff John!

Word of mouth is huge and I get what I feel are similar results from the internet.

I can't use a car sign because of the golf club I belong to.

Phone book I dropped about 23 years ago.

What about stores? I don't work for them but I get good recommendations from them.

    Paul.

    Paul,

I don't have a separate category for stores. I call those referrals
    word-of-mouth referrals.

What I am finding is that people often use what I call triangulation.  They ask their piano teacher or a music store and hear my name, then find out that I also tune for their church or whatever. Next, they google me.  Finding my tuning and service website, they read about my history, training and experience.  I run a little blog with some interesting "adventures in piano tuning" stories.  Piano tuning in the arctic, or on remote wilderness islands. Everyone loves it.

All of this combined creates a significant amount of goodwill and trust in me before we even meet.  It's a done deal before they even call me.

I  get some new clients directly from my web site alone, but I am impressed by the power of corroboration between word of mouth and a website.

I am always surprised that so many in our business still don't have a real website. I am convinced they are missing out on new clients.
