I've been doing this a long time but...

Does anyone mix their chalk with any other substance to make it "stickier". I've tried a water slurry without success.

    Peter,
I've always used chalk with acetone.  I can do two or three fittings before having to apply more.  It dries in seconds.  I clean the edge of the flange off with straight acetone and paper towels when I'm finished.

I use wax-based shoe polish ... like "Shinola".  Chalk also works.  Pick your poison...

Since I have a refinishing shop, I just use materials i already have on hand. My go to that works real well for me is to use a water based floor finish and add black pigment (or any color really). It transfers really nice and cleans up easily, or you can just leave it there as it will dry.

Do you mean for a release formula if you are "glassing" the block or for marking the block for fitting?

    Marking the block for fitting.

Thus far I think I like the shoe polish idea the best.

    What do you use, David?

    Peter,
I am working on this upright piano that has a string frame that was never fitted properly. At one spot there is this huge bulge (casting defect) that prevented the string frame from laying flat. The Werner Company had made a hole in the pinblock to compensate, but never made it deep enough. I painted my black concoction on the cast iron and put in a few screws. Lifting the frame back out and would carve out more wood marked in black. I was left with this....
