First time i saw this.
By having the hinge pin facing inward, it sure made it difficult to get it off. I had to hold the lid vertically with one hand to pull the pins out. Good thing it was a small lid.

Yes, you are correct Larry in that in schools anything that is not welded down can walk. Some pianos have the hinge attached in such a way that you can insert the pin from the inside and not damage anything.

We not know this was a school piano, and there is no mention of a school in the post.

The damage has been done so perhaps it does not matter any more for this piano.   But we all know there are other, non-destructive ways to secure hinge pins.
