Baldwin SF10 hinge pin size

    Hello all,

I had a client contact me who lives more than 2.5 hours away who has a 1983 Baldwin SF10 with missing lid hinge pins. I understand that a previous owner had just put in nails. Does anyone happen to have a similar piano handy who can take a quick measurement of these hinge pins?

    Peter

The hinge pins area 2" long. Bring along several pins. But also take a drill and several bits about the same size.

You'll need the customer's help, but remove the lid, and take off the hinges, (both parts). Figure out which pin fits the best, even a little snug. Then put the two parts of the hinge together, hold on tight, and drill out the holes in the hinges.

We have a bunch of these SF 7' Baldwins  at BU/Music from right around this same time period, Pins are 2'' usually of the bent not straight variety mic'ing at around .148''. You should take your box of assorted  sized lid pins just in case,  if you dont have a collection get one! No need to remove lid just fully close it, check that the current nail substitutes are aligned in both hinges, remove rear 'nail" and try your  hinge pins for best fit if marginally a little too tight lightly  file  then lube with a drop of dish detergent or similar ''artisan'' piano grease!  and holding bent section with pliers feed into hinge, if marginally  a tad loose give the straight section  of the pin a slight and I mean slight tweak or bend  and it'll firm right up. Repeat for front hinge.
Of course if the hinges are not aligned, rim to underside of lid then you may need a little help , close lid fully remove nail substitutes and align hinges, sometimes it helps while you do this to have someone on the bent side raise the lid just an inch or so, you have to align both hinges at the same time....have at it!

Thanks, Wim and Martin. I do have a hinge pin collection, as well as several sizes of brass rods for making my own. However, this lady was hoping to pick up the replacements from me next time that she is in town. Maybe I'll offer her some 0.148" pins with the caveat that they might not fit exactly and she might have to wait until the next service appointment.
