Not a bridge pin problem. I'm guessing just poor winding. But what do I know? Any recommendations on how to reduce the false beats in wound bass strings? Would a twist help, maybe?

Grab the string and give it a firm tug to the right (against the bridge).  This might render it through the bridge and frequently solves bass false beats.  (I am not responsible for you breaking a string, but this is rare)  This also works on tenor and treble strings.  Pulling the note above pitch and settling it down also sometimes works.

Is it a single or double strings? If it's a double you could try Pitch Lock.

Is it a single or double strings?

Each string, individually. Whether mono or bi-chord. It's not the strings competing against each other, as in a bi-chord. It is each string all by itself generating false beats. But as I write this I think a better explanation might be that what I'm hearing is the partials of that string not lining up. It's like the inharmonicity of the string is SO high that all the partials are fighting each other. IE: If P1 is, say, 440 then P2 would be 881. Definitely an audible beat gonna happen there.
