Thank you to everyone who responded to my post to suggest a book for my apprentice.  We will start with Pianos Inside Out, but the other suggestions are excellent.  There were also several suggestions about whether to start with other work besides tuning, and when it is best to use a book.  My business is almost all tuning, light repair, and some regulation, usually not a full regulation.  She is very interested in piano work but has another option for a career, so it works well for our situation to start with tuning, which requires much less in the way of investment in tools to get started.  She is 18, far younger than most of the members of my chapter, so I am happy that she has a significant interest.  Even if I had a full-service operation that included rebuilding and a lot of regulation, requiring her to learn everything and to be a full-time apprentice might discourage her from getting a start.

    Loren,
In your other thread, someone said "What is PTG's answer to this question? Sadly, PTG has no clear answer."

I was surprised to see that no one recommended the Pace lesson plans. Pretty basic and clear instruction in regulation and repair. These are available on the PTG website store under "shop online/exam resources."

Also, Rick Baldassin's series "On Pitch," (book and DVDs" gives very clear information on listening to, and matching partials for tuning.

Igrec's book is very good, but quite a lot for a beginner to digest.

I would add the Guide to Field Repairs by Steve Brady (PTG publication).
This book teaches the repair problems you're most likely to encounter when you're "just tuning."
(For those who despair, PTG has other projects in the works.)

Two books worth looking at for regulation are the Vertical Action Regulation Curriculum and the Grand Action Regulation Curriculum. Laroy Edwards updated the vertical book; the grand book, 2nd edition will be introduced at the convention. It's much improved over the first edition and is the student workbook for the Grand Action Regulation in 37 Steps class given at the home office.  Both publications will be available at the PTG booth.

Central Illinois Chapter had a 'library' and is now looking for anyone interested in the old books we had there. There is a big pile of technical manuals, player piano materials of all kinds, books like Let's Tune Up, Theory and Practice of Piano Forte Building, Piano Tuning and Allied Arts, The Piano and It's Acoustics, etc.

    1.  Is there a 'free book' table at the convention? (Not sure if our chapter has anyone going, and I don't want to make anyone else responsible for these materials if they are not picked up. Just trying to make one last effort to get them where they might be wanted before recycling them.)

    2. Anyone interested in what we have, please contact me and we can talk details.

    3. Does the home office want really old books for the museum? I can't believe we have anything they don't already have, but I had to ask.

Our newest members prefer other learning method to reading books, so not even they want any of this stuff.

Even a non-response will tell me what I need to know---thanks!
