The pedal lyre braces are no longer doing their job well on a client's Steinway A.  The lyre box is moving a lot, causing extraneous noise.  In the past I've simply filled the small void with veneer or hard cardboard.  I am wondering if there is a more elegant repair.  Perhaps a method that would allow for adjustment of the lyre brace once it is place.

    Thanks,

I think it is Jurgen at Piano Forte Supply who has what you need. They are the posts for a vertical action that would normally screw into the keybed. (They go inline with the brace and keybed.) Though I have yet to do this (patiently waiting), the procedure is to drill a hole for the post, install the post, then shorten the original brace as needed to allow good adjustment. The cut end of the lyre fits into the cupped end of the action post.

    Hopefully clear??

There is a fitting which screws into the keybed and is adjustable. It has a cupped, hex head. Pianotek has them but I don't know what they're called. They are pictured on the Julius Klinke parts photo, top left.

    Jon,

I found the item you mentioned in the Pianotek catalog,  Page A-50.  The cost is $3.99.  That is exactly what I'm looking for.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Why not just take a short flathead screw and screw it into the bottom of the hole in the lyre box so that it is recessed all the way to the bottom of the hole. See if it helps. If you need to take out more slack in the support braces simply back off the screw until the braces are as tight as you want them. This is pretty much the same principle as the shift stop screw in the right cheekblock.

    Geoff,

If I am understanding your method correctly any adjustment would require removal of the lyre. That's not a big deal, but in trying to figure out a cool solution it would be nice to be able to make the adjustment with the lyre in place.

    David --

You don't have to remove the pedal lyre. Only loosen it enough to remove the support rods and gain access to the screws. Turn the screws a bit, replace the rods, tighten up the lyre bolts. The advantage here is that you don't have to modify the rods in order to get them to fit in the little cup/bolts. The advantage to the cup/bolts, however, is that you tighten up everything just once and then adjust the cup/bolts till the rods are tight. I actually like both methods. I was just offering an alternative that I've used that didn't involve a saw.
