There is an extra bichord on the tenor bridge at the break of the Mason & Risch upright.  No hammer strikes it, but it lies between C and C#.  What could be the purpose of the string and what should I do to service it?

I wonder if it's the Conover auxiliary vibrator. See my other post. And see Daniel Spillane.

I've seen this on Mason & Risch uprights and if I remember correctly the strings are permanently damped.
They were probably trying to improve the break by reducing the "end of bridge effect ".  I believe Del Fandrich has written about this in the Journal.
As long as the strings are singing tight I would just leave them be.
