I am having zero luck contacting Young Chang regarding ordering a new set of action brackets. They told me about a year ago that they were back ordered. All consequent attempts to contact them via e-mail or phone have failed. My customer's grand is unplayable and she'e getting upset with me and with Young Chang. Does anybody know what's going on with YC. Are they even in business anymore?

There's a new company that has taken over service. Young Chang America is no longer. Korean operations are still going on. Sam Son is no longer at the company. Maybe somebody knows more, but that's what I know.
Here's an article: http://youngchang.com/young-chang-names-new-u-s-distributor-pal-sound/. I found this by Google. Lots of more articles if you search "Young Chang and PAL Sound".

I just sent Pal Sound an e-mail.  It will be interesting to see how they respond.  I'll post any results because I can't be the only one in PTG who would like to get their hands on some brackets.

If availability is getting this hard, it might not be a bad idea to order a couple of sets to keep in stock.

I went to the mail box this afternoon, and lo and behold, there was a set of new action brackets from Pal Sound.  I had e-mailed them earlier this week and I guess I finally got through.  Anyway, it looks like they are available from Pal Sound.  They do want the model number and serial number of the piano.  My customer was thrilled and immediately scheduled an appointment for me to pick up the action just before they leave for spring vacation.  I'll have it done when they get back.
    Happy Day

For the enterprising technician, making action bracket's is not that hard. Draw up the design in CAD, create a dxf file, send to any machine shop with a laser or water jet, have it mailed back, drill a couple holes, install and regulate.
    Easy!

Are all the defective Y-C action brackets the same, or are there several types?

They are not all the same so that is why you need the model and serial number to get a match. Also when you replace the old brackets you will need to drill some holes and need to purchase some longer screws since there the new bracket has a taller base. You may also need to chisel out some of the wood in the frame so the bracket feet fit .

I've always had to give the model and serial number of the piano. I presumed it was because each model had their own set of brackets. Maybe not. I've never really paid attention. But I wonder if the new company understands that, or if they will just send out a set of brackets, regardless of the model.  Anyone know for sure?

There are two different sizes of brackets you may receive. I don't know
how to ask for the correct size. Presumably the make, model and serial
number you provide will ensure you get the correct size. Unfortunately,
that has not always been the case for me.

Wim is correct: You only get one set of free replacement brackets.

If you get a set of action brackets that are not perfect-fit
replacements, you will have to do what Jim Kelly described, including
possibly extending the wooden base the bracket feet rest on.

There are two sizes. The ends are the short ones to fit on the end cleats, the center ones are taller. But maybe not on every model.

I do not think you can stock up on the brackets and I believe you have to give them the serial number of the piano that needs the brackets.
The cracked brackets are a silver color and the cracks can be visible or barely visible. Use caution when removing the action from the piano and do not lift the action by the hammer rail or action brackets or you will be sorry. Keep in mind you will need to drill some new holes on the key frame and also will need to adjust the action spread. I have some directions if anyone needs them. I am not sure what the status is but at one time there was a two month backorder. It would be nice if YC could send everyone 2 sets so you always had a set- maybe in the interest of good customer relations they would adopt such a practice. There is NO WARRANTY reimbursement so the customer has to pay you for the procedure. If you are lucky no one before you has attempted to regulate the piano....

I just did an action bracket replacement last week.

"I do not think you can stock up on the brackets and I believe you have to give them the serial number of the piano that needs the brackets."

    Correct.

"The cracked brackets are a silver color and the cracks can be visible or barely visible."

Correct. OR they can be visually cracked to smithereens!

"Use caution when removing the action from the piano and do not lift the action by the hammer rail or action brackets or you will be sorry."

    CARN good advice!!!

"I am not sure what the status is but at one time there was a two month backorder."

Mine were processed fairly quickly - no more than two weeks after request.

" If you are lucky no one before you has attempted to regulate the piano...."

Yeah, I wasn't so lucky.........  :-(     But hey, I charged her!  :-)    Whole process - replace brackets and touch-up regulation (capstans and let-off) took me two hours. Low bass let-off dowels had to be turned 4-1/2 full turns to get let-off up about where it should be.

Note that YC manufactured other pianos that also have action bracket problems including Cline, Wurlitzer and Weber that I've replaced. The current rep seemed unaware of this in a recent correspodence when I requested brackets for a Wurlitzer that has the problem.
