I am hoping to locate someone who is comfortable doing an IRS-proof appraisal of a Steinway M located in the greater Philadelphia area.

How does this work Wim? I assume you send him some pictures, inspect it yourself describing it to him, etc...
    What's the fee?

Yes, Leo will work with you. He sends yo a list of things he needs, including pictures of the piano, action, etc, and your assessment of the piano. He then takes that information and does a complete analysis of the piano, compare the values of comparable pianos, and comes up with a figure.

The last time I worked with him he charged me a fee. (Can't give that to you here, but he'll tell you).  What you charge your customer is up to you. I usually charge the customer for my inspection, on top of Leo's fee.

Leo is very good to work with. I was just recently asked to appraise an antique piano that was donated to the university. The customer was told the piano was worth in excess of $20,000. But after reviewing my pictures and assessment, Leo speculated the value was less than $5000. Since this was less than the "threshold" for IRS deduction, he didn't have to the research, and thus didn't charge me.

That's good to know. I'm now collecting a list of certified musical inspectors who I can count on for this valuable work.

Russell Berkley in San Diego is a Certified Piano Appraiser. (858) 488-5810. You can take his appraisals before any court or IRS. Many years rebuilding and marketing Steinways and other pianos. I'm not sure if he needs to inspect it personally. Give him a call, you'll get a lot of good advice.
    Good luck.
