Today I have estimates and recommendations for four uprights that a local church had collected over the years. Two I recommended that they keep, one was worth offering to a local student and one was just a problem.
The problem piano was a massive Conover Cable upright with almost no intact key tops and a few needed normal adjustments (lost motion, loose screws, one missing whippen and hammer butt).
This piano had a wonderful tone and great sounding bass strings and one of the best bass/tenor breaks and string scales I have ever heard on an upright.
It would cost close to $1000 just to bring this up to good playing condition and lots more to fully restore it, but I hate to see a piano with this sound get hauled off to a dump.
