Twice I have visited the Medical doctor to remove broken Hearos ear plugs in my ear.  I now have molded ear plugs with ER-15 db filters. It's the best thing I've ever done for my ears. Wonderfully safe.
Thanks to our list and our colleague who recommended them to me.

I've had some for about 25 years now, and they've done a great job for me. Most of the time I don't use them for tuning (but I would in noisy little practice rooms with bright pianos) but I always have them with me and put them in whenever something is too loud.

I had 35 db inserts, but lost one, so I now use the 50 db inserts. Since I'm using them in very loud situations, the higher number is fine.

I'm probably about due for another hearing test and a new pair.

    Petrus,
Find a hearing specialist, who can mold ear plugs for your ear, preferably also a musician. Ask for Etymotic ER-15 db filters with your plugs. The specialist will mold the plugs and order the replaceable filters for the plugs.
I used my ENT hearing aid specialist who also has an MA in Music Education.
When you ask, they know the Etymotic Co.

Petrus, I just went to a local audiologist and asked for musicans ear plugs. Of course, I got a thorough exam at the same time.

Five years later I brought my sister to the same audiologist, since she was interested in learning to tune. As a thank you, he gave me a quick hearing test, then he pulled out the graph from 5 years before. They were practically identical! These things work! Well, they work if you keep them with you at all times, and use them as needed.

I got my plugs at a business that primarily sells hearing aids. An audiologist made the impressions for the molds and subsequently tweaked the fitting for comfort. I chose the Etymotic ER-15 filters but found they attenuated a bit much for me. FWIW, a sales person at Etymotic told me he thought piano tuners generally go with the ER-9 filters. That's what I use. Something to discuss with the audiologist. Try to get it right the first time; additional filters are rather pricey.

"what is the brand and where are they being sold?"

Westone is a common brand of custom-molded plug. Commonly carried by audiologists around here. It's not clear if the filter insert is ONLY made by Etymotics, or is a generic design made by many different companies (they all sure look the same though), but they're kind of a ripoff, so yes, try to get it right the first time. Mine came with 15 db but I ordered 9, another $50. For me 9 is enough. It's only piano tuning, not jack hammering or working on the airport tarmac.

I may also get the ER-9. I’m wondering if they may have a test pair? It would have been nice. They do cost $40.00 each...$80.00 pair. I am fine with 15 however. My audiologist thought I should use the 15. He said the DB reduction was level across the entire spectrum.....whatever that meant.

The Etymotic website gives this information about the two filters:

ER-9 Provides flat 9-dB sound reduction through the mid range and 15 dB in the highs
ER-15 Provides uniform 15-dB sound reduction across frequencies
