  • 1.  Market for PVA glue thickener?

I created a compound that thickens Titebond and other PVA glues, does not seem to loose strength either. I thought it would be convenient since titebond is at the hardware store and i normally have to order the thicker stuff. Plus now i have further control over how thick too.Would there be a market for this?
Here's a pic of thickening up original titebond and gluing a hammer on, left a nice collar.

    Chris,

    1) How do you KNOW that it does not affect glue strength?

    2)  What about long term?

    3) Does it effectively increase the solids content by somehow affecting the amointn of moisture...or just how does it work?

I ask simply because (I'm sure I really needn't tell you), sometimes chemical (re)formulations can have unintended consequences, not always evident immediately.

My guess as to marketability would be that, as long as it is a benign addition, it is good to know as a PD thing, but don't expect anyone to pay for it.

I don't think a glue collar does not makes for a stronger joint. It is simply cost effective not to wipe away the glue that pushed forwards. I bevel the front edge of the moldings so a not to scrape the glue forwards leaving a glue starved joint. With a collar in front of the beveled edge on the molding, the glue usually sucks in and leaves no collar. A glue collar falls under the WFF aspect (Warm Fuzzy Feeling).

Over the years I've done the glue with the collar and without much, if any collar, using everything from Elmers, CA and other wood glues. They all seem to work just fine and I never got a call to come back requesting a return visit to, "fix that broken hammer that you fixed and now it wobbles about or is broken again." Clients don't care what the glue joints look like, they only want them to work. I still like it when I see all the original glue collar's on an old piano.

    Great fun this PTG site.
