I have a wonderful client with a Kranich and Bach grand piano that has an issue where the whippens keep breaking. Is there an after market whippen I could purchase from Schaff or PianoTek ?

It's been a year since I've seen the piano in question. I wanted to run out of that house screaming when I was done last year... so much glue, so much thread.... now it's back :)

The clients are wonderful folks and great clients, but that piano scares me!

Customer says three notes not playing, I'm fearing the worst.

I want to recommend an action  rebuild or whippen replacement type thing but for now she wants the keys to simply function so her grand kids can play it.

I don't see any Kranich and Bach type whippens sold at Schaff.

    Any ideas?

    Sean, your website doesn't work.

However, steal from A#-0 to start, then A#-7 etc.

Thank you for the feedback on my website, Larry.  It wasn't what I needed it to be (that's being nice about it!) so I am working with a professional web builder and expect to be up and running in a few weeks.

I liked the URL seanstaffordpiano.com so I am keeping that, but the entire page is being redesigned. If you don't mind I will let you know when it's done and solicit your feedback.

Over the course of life, I think we all learn that there is a time to "do it yourself" and a time to pay a professional! The tasks vary for each of us, but for me website design was not my forte!! I'll just leave it at that : )

About the whippens, I seem to remember borrowing from C8 and A0 last time......

I do appreciate you taking the time to offer your advice. I wish I could show up with a pocket full of K & B whippens to bolt on.

    Thanks again,

    Sean

It's better to borrow from the sharps at the extremes as Larry mentioned. For the compulsive key presser, they generally only pick on the white keys. The sharps can be bolstered to level with f/r punchings.

WNG can supply what you need. We have done a couple of these successfully with them.

If you can get the replacement whips listed in the Schafer catalog for the early Kawai grands you can install them on a Kranich and Bach.  You will not be able to adjust drop after install so that must be estimated before install but otherwise these are a good fit.  If you can get them still.  Far better than the disastrous Kranich and Bach whips.

If you send WNG the old stack they will send you a new one ready to install. Brackets, rails, wippens, shanks and flanges and hammers. Just the bracket mounting screws and some minor regulation is all you will have to do. This is by far the cheapest and best solution. You won't learn much but your customer will be grateful.
