    Hi all,
Tomorrow I'll be visiting a piano with one loose pin. I checked my stock of CA in fridge, and have an unopened bottle of super thin made by BSI for a local hobby shop, and have one new bottle, but I purchased it about 18 months ago.

Any consensus about how long the stuff lasts? By "last" I don't mean functional--it's obviously still thin and useful. I just mean still at its absolutely thinnest viscosity for treating pins. One pin in the bass had been treated by a previous tech (as evidenced by a buildup of glue around it), but it hadn't worked. Perhaps it didn't get down past the bushing. Since the pin I'll be treating is B-flat3, I really want to give it the best chance.

I still have time to buy a fresh bottle.

    thanks

    Scott,
When I purchase my CA from McMaster (Loctite) it usually has an expiration date about a year out. To assure maximum strength purchase only CA with expiration dates listed.

I find for tuning pin treatment, as long as it wicks in, it doesn't matter. You aren't gluing anything together, you are glue sizing. The resulting friction from the glue and the increased pressure give the pin a nice feel when tuning. Not mushy or snappy.

Bob Davis suggested I use a piece of veneer in the hole when it is just one pin. Makes sense, probably in the factory that hole had a problem
It is really pretty easy to loosen the coil and extract the pin. Squirt some glue in the hole, put in the veneer and drive the pin in. The CA glue gives the hole stability.

I recently applied CA to a couple tuning pins on a Yamaha C3 - similar to what Keith describes. However I did not use any veneer. The pin was jumpy and very loose initially. I extracted the pin, swabbed the hole, coated the pin and re-installed. Good gravy, that pin is snug - and not jumpy at all. I would guess up in the 160 in.-lbs. torque range. I did that a while back - maybe six months to a year ago - still very tight.
