Ed, Brian, (and, all the other Alte Kachers on the list)....
While I think that the older Mapes plated wire had a place, I'm not
always sure where that place might be/have been.
In general, I had similar experiences to what both of you are reporting.
On the other hand, in venues in which (believe it or not, rust
prevention was valued excessively over musical sound) it worked
surprisingly well. I'm thinking here in particular of a couple of
formerly well-known So-Cal jazz clubs in which even plated stainless
steel could rust.
My problem with the stuff, touched on above, is that it was a very
different sound than anything with which I wanted to be associated.
Thin, nasal, tending to break too easily, and, as Brian notes, not all
that easy to tune. After a while, I gave up and dumped it...ate a few
restringings just so that I didn't have to listen to it anymore (let
alone tune it).
One major difference between the older stuff and the newer is that I
think that I remember that the Mapes plated wire was done with tin; and
the newer Paullelo wire is plated with nickel.
So....Ed, I'm very interested in your findings around the Paullelo
plated wire.
Hope that everyone is surviving the encroaching vicissitudes of old age
while we continue to the fast-receding coattails of youth!
Kind regards to all ages....
Horace

While it looked beautiful, over a very short period of time, the plating made it difficult to tune.?? This seemed to be caused by interaction between the plating and brass of the agraffes as well as over the "V" bar.?? Fortunately, I discovered this while doing the initial chippings and subsequent tunings.?? I ended up taking all the wire out and replacing it with non-plated wire.?? I've tuned a couple pianos with plated wire, with the same results.

While It will start to show corrosion at some point, with that kind of exposure, this is pretty impressive. You can see just a touch of corrosion happening at the cut end, where it is not plated.

The old familiar faces in all the old familiar places. You know that line can be read many ways!
Brian, I had the same experience with plated wire many years in the past. Jim has been using it for some time and not reporting problems so Mesr. Paulello seems to have "plated" the nut correctly.
I am also wondering if it can be used for wound string core, so I will have to hammer some on the anvil and look at it under the microscope. Then scrape it over a V-bar a few hundred times and look again.
All the "New" wires are making my imagination run. So may possibilities to explore. I do think further advances in wound strings would make truly wonderful sounding small pianos a reality. There is still a market for that!
