I am trying to determine the best way to deal with the glide bolts of a grand where there are bolts on the balance rail and coming up through the keybed. This piano was worked on by someone previously and it did not play very well however it is coming along . The glide bolts coming through the keybed have to be adjusted with a screw driver from under since the threaded bolt has a slot in it. There are six such bolts that had been at different heights . The five on the balance rail also varied in height. It would seem to me that they all should be set flush with the rail or the keybed then adjusted following the typical order or procedure I have used before however I am confused about when to adjust a front glide and a balance rail glide or which set should get adjusted first. Should I do these with keys on or off and finally is the paper method best or is the WN&G gauge the best method ? The brand of piano is Huntington but I have not found any regulation guidance specs.

Can you describe the distribution (spacing) of the glide bolts?
    You said:

Is this a typo? Are there, in fact, front rail glides?  I'm suspecting this is the case.
You seem to be confusing yourself on two (or more) levels:
    - how to regulate these balance rail glides
    - how to regulate the (front?) glides
    - what order

Assuming the keyframe has crown (front to back), I would start by turning up balance glides, then adjust front glides (starting from 0) so that they are all exerting equal upward pressure on the front rail.  You can use a .001" or .0005" feeler (or some newspaper?) to make sure 'pull' is equal. I assume that these glides are meant to both eliminate knocking as well as reduce drag of key frame shift with una corda.
Next do balance rail with whatever method you're comfortable.  Done correctly, you should get the same (equivalent) results.
Recheck front rail glides to see if balance rail adjust changed anything.
    What am I missing?

I would lower all glides and adjust the bedding on the front rail first. Make certain the back rail is bedded well. Then proceed as usual to adjust the b/r glides. If you have the WNG tool, use it, otherwise knocking will be sufficient.
