Here are the instructions I would give:
1. With the fallboard out of the piano, examine the left and right side walls inside the piano, as well as each end of the fallboard to get an idea of what needs to slide in where. In the piano, there will probably be a round "pin" on the right and a longer rectangular "pin" on the left connected to the soft-fall mechanism.
2. Make sure the rectangular soft fall mechanism (on the left probably) is rotated up and angled slightly out, about 30 degress counter-clockwise from vertical.
3. Grab the fallboard in both hands and place it upright on top of the sharp keys. Set it down there for a second and readjust your hands for the final approach.
4. Pick it back up vertically, high enough that the bottom is above the level of the pins on either side of the piano, then carefully move it toward the piano so the pins are directly below the metal slots on either end of the fallboard.
5. Gently lower the fallboard onto the pins. The fallboard should be at the same angle as you set the softfall rectangle (piano slightly closed) Focus on the left side and get it started in first. Then once it's sliding down, make sure the right side slot is going over its pin.
6. Replace screws (if any) that were removed from the little metal brackets, being careful not to scrape the finish with your screwdriver.
If this doesn't work, snap a picture of each part you looked at in step 1 and send those for better instructions.

Mr. Jamison,
I usually like to have the rectangular pieces tilted forward at around 40 degrees off of vertical. This lets me put the fallboard in at an angle while keeping my hands free of the case arms.

Thanks, Jon. The two rotating pins in the piano are rectangular, I think? These should both be oriented vertically and the fallboard dropped down onto them while in the "up" position? (This guy has turned the pins with pliers, I think).

Look at the sides of the fallboard for the tracks that the pin needs to be in. Look for a flat portion on the pin to travel on the side in the track.

A client of mine (25 miles away) removed his Kawai grand "soft fall" fallboard to retrieve a pencil. It came off easy enough, but now he can't replace it. I've replaced it in the past with no problem, but I can't really describe it to the guy as I don't have a Kawai here to refer to. Could anyone write a simple description of the process I could pass along? Otherwise, I'll be driving down for a 20-second job. He will give me the model number tonight. It just lifts out and has no screws.
