Would those of you with 'expanding bracket' experience also list piano brands where we should be alert to this?

I have run into a Samick and a Schumann that exhibit the symptoms. I have watched these discussions carefully over the years and it seems to be pianos circa 1990-1995 and I've tried to track who owned what brand name at what time.

    Thanks for any info,

Have fixed it on Young Chang and Wurlitzer. Although I had read about the problem I had not run into it . Shortly after ,the Young Chang  came along . the action at the top octaves was so far forward to the tail the jacks did not touch the letoff buttons . Further, the brackets were so far gone they crumbled.

    Nancy

As far as I know, Young Chang made pianos with these names.

    Young Chang
    Weber
    Knabe
    Wurlitzer
    Schuman
Samick, (a few when then they tried to join forces)

You might want to check with Mario Igrec for any updates since he published Pianos Inside Out. He had listed Young Chang, Worlitzer, Weber, Knabe, Clne, and PianoDisc PD seres, with serial numbers between 0500000 and 118750. (p. 149.

    Yes,
I’ve had the pleasure of working on Wurlitzer, Weber and Young Chang pianos with the same problem.

Schaff sells or sold upright action brackets for a brand made in the 1920s. I forget the name. French I believe.

    Everybody blames Young Chang.
Actually you had to fill out form so they could get recompense from the action company that built the actions.
Due to the nature of pot metals and the chemists (think of them as chefs) who cook them up, it was random as to whether or not they expand.
Most pot metals are made from scrap and scrap can be contaminated with battery acid and other such stuff.

So really you need to list the expansion by the action maker, not the brand

    The action companies are
    Pratt Reed,
Wessel Nickle Gross,(Mason Hamlin, Piano Disc)
    Renner,,
Now Steinway of New York will have Renner actions and the front of the cheek blocks will look like Hamburg and built the same as hamburg but have the cold pressed hammers.
Beckstein has it's own action company and that why Samick tried to buy them.
    Tokiwa.

    I feel I missed one

I bought some action brackets from Schaff to put on a Foster grand that had some crumbling brackets. Never did the job and still have the brackets. So it was not all Young Chang but I do not know all of the history but I would think it must have been a big enough problem for a supply house to cast and stock brackets. I will try to do a little more research and look up the year and serial number on the piano. I do remember that I had a hard time doing any regulation, ordered brackets after seeing obvious cracks but the customer just wanted the piano tuned...

I have run into this problem on Young Changs and YC-made PianoDisc grands.
