Nothing. NOTHING beats an oscillating spindle sander for reshaping hammers. I made an angled add-on surface to shape tapered hammers.
The Rigid at Home Depot is what I use. It also includes an oscillating belt sander which is great for sanding pneumatic boards.
Sanding sleeves and other abrasive products are available at
Klingspor.
If the hammers need reshaping, they probably need repinning, tapering and SW graduation which justifies their removal from the rail.

Some 30 years ago someone at the PTG National Convention offered a mini belt sander for hammer filing. In my years of CAUT work I have found this to be an invaluable and efficient way to quickly re-shape older hammers with the goal of achieving an optimal crown profile for improved tone production. With practice it has proved to be an extremely fast and invaluable tool for the wholesale removal felt in the institutional (or for that matter any other) setting.
Does anyone know of a source for replacement belts? Or perhaps an abrasive company that will custom-make sanding belts to order? I'm running out of belts!
Thanks.
