    Hello All,

I've been tasked with researching air filtration systems for the "shop" that I work in.  I put "shop" in quotes because it's not exactly a traditional shop space, as there are no power tools to create sawdust.  It's kind of a combination showroom/shop space.  The dust that we are looking to filter from the air is primarily hammer filing dust which gets all over the place such as damper heads, piano lids, and my irritated pores.

Have you any recommendations for air filtration/dust removal systems that filter the ambient air and would work well in an approx. 1500 square foot space?  A quiet system would be a plus, but considering we can just turn it off and on, it's not imperative.

Any thoughts about your experiences with these systems are highly appreciated.  Thank you for your time!

    Best,

    Luke

Any of the boxes that hang from the ceiling and cost ~$400 will be fine. Here's an example: https://woodworker.com/afs1000-air-filter-16hp-115v-mssu-138-626.asp?search=dust&searchmode=2

I have a different brand but their specs are similar.

Something I used before getting the air filter -- and continue to use as a supplement -- is a simple 20" box fan with a standard 20x20 furnace filter taped to the "air in" side of the fan. I am able to locate it near the section where I'm shaping hammers and it catches a portion of the felt even before it has a chance to wander into the ambient air. When I'm doing an upright action mounted on a cradle, I usually mount it on blocks so the centerline of the filter is about the level of the hammers.  For grands, it can just sit on the bench.

I use an air-driven mini belt sander to do my shaping before surfacing by hand and the filter keeps up with its output. Any time I'm going to create dust, I just click it on and let it run maybe 15 minutes after I'm done with dust creation. This approach is effective in minimizing dust.

you may want to investigate using some form of downdraft table to pull the felt down or a design using some plastic piping and hoods. some of the nicer hepa vacuums made by festool are quiet and super efficient and also potable. i am not sure a ceiling hung unit will catch it all the way you want or do a good job with the wool fibers which differ from sawdust. maybe check with some of the hammer suppliers to see what they use. if you are trying to prevent contamination in a showroom you may need a combination of solutions properly sized and set up. i am trying to get some of the real fine dust that seems to be drawn to my high gloss black polyester. part of the dust is the fine drywall dust when the house was built. it gets in your duct works and blows out any time the hvac runs. i have purchased a number of individual units but need a unit just in the great room where the piano. send me a message and i will tell you a place that may have a solution. by the way make sure you and other workers are protecting your lungs with proper respirators and eye/ear protection

Umm...   I just stated that my direct, real-world experience is that the ceiling unit does work quite well.

You could look at IQ-Air or a TRACS filtration unit. They might be a hint too small for the area.

With fans, what you exhaust you have to have “make up air” or, you run the risk of filtering your air through the fiberglass in the walls. (If the fan creates negative pressure, it will suck through any hole it can find.)

That’s why I recommend using a filter internally. What I use in our shop is made by Oneida Air. It’s a 5hp unit for dust collection and a huge HEPA. I ducted a “sweep” to the floor. This keeps the airflow moving downward.

    Good luck!

A vacuum nozzle mounted in close proximity to the source will prevent the felt from traveling.
