    Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

Last week, not one but TWO performers met with me to discuss their proposed use of electric toothbrushes inside pianos in performance at our school. Not surprisingly, they each thought that they had invented the technique. While we may never know who came up with this first (any other known contenders out there?), you may experience the music made by each of these artists from the comfort of your computer or smart phone. The concerts are this Tuesday (tomorrow) the 18th at 8 PM (Pacific time) and Friday, the 21st, also at 8 PM. Go to CalArts.edu and search for ROD webcast.

Ah, but which particular style/brand of electric toothbrush? And is there a silent version?

I take dibs on having invented the use of the non-electric toothbrush (I use it to clean between tuning pins, makes a lovely sound).

    Adding to Fred:
    - toothpaste type?
    - stiffness of bristles (S,M,H)
    - to be of any real musical interest it should be for electric toothbrush - 2,4 or more hands.

    David,

I know that you will be watching and listening in order to find out for yourself if sufficient musical interest can be mustered and sustained with only a single player. (And I didn't say that the toothbrushes are in the players hands at all times in both cases, did I?) One of these pieces is 45 minutes, and the other is 5 minutes.

I shall seek your reviews in the Blog-o-sphere!

Put a star by your name, John, 'cause that's a good one! I'll be using that (and crediting you, of course!)

    Still recovering from John's profundity.
Are concerts recorded?  5PM is on the early side to be home.

    David,

Yes, the webcasts from both of our primary concert venues are archived. (You're in the eastern time zone, right? That would make it an 11 PM broadcast, your time.)

As I 'belatedly' sought to find the site from phone, I realized my mistake. That's, like, soo embarrassing?

Here's an idea for  the new music aficionados: Blow the piano strings using a leaf blower ( gas motor recommended, but if not allowed inside, use a high powered electric one.) If one listens closely, it is possible to hear the interesting harmonics emanating from the strings, akin to the sound produced by an aeolian harp.

    YMMV
