    Hi Gang,

I was asked by a student (yes, he asked first!)  about the use of acoustic putty to secure  some sort of exciter to the piano soundboard.  I'm not opposed to excitement of soundboards but I looked up the putty and notice that it says it's not recommended for finished surfaces.  Anyone have any experience with this stuff (used more in the guitar world) and have any ideas for an alternative?

    Thanks,
    Zeno

When I look up acoustic putty, I see something made to put around outlet boxes and the like as an acoustic seal for soundproofing apartments, not something to stick on a mike or whatever. I've had sound techs put a grayish putty on soundboards to attach things, and it comes off clean, but I have no idea what type or brand.

    Hi,

In my misspent youth as a technician, I did a fair amount of studio and
live concert work...paid reasonably well at the time...hours
    sucked...anyway:

While I cannot immediately remember the brand, there was a good deal of
use of "acoustic putty" for affixing pickups/etc to soundboards...with
the more enlightened engineers and presenters doing the affixing to the
underside of the board, just in case.

As with what Fred found, the stuff that one generally finds through Dr.
Google is actually formulated for helping to created fireblocks in
construction, not (necessarily) for anything directly acoustic. As
these kinds of putties tend to be for permanent installation, I'm not
sure that I would use them anywhere on a piano.

As I'm writing this, I'm remembering that my brother (an ardent model
railroader) uses various iterations of Silly Putty for everything from
making instant gluing supports to semi-permanent installations while he
is building, repairing, or documenting various model RR layouts and/or
procedures. A look at the "other uses" section of the following
    Wikipedia entry might be useful:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silly_Putty

I do not remember him ever having any trouble with finish degradation in
these settings; and am fairly certain that this is what I saw being used
    years before.

Perhaps Geoff Sykes has more directly usable information.

    Kind regards.

I got curious, and found this: Acoustically Transparent Adhesive Guitar Pickup Putty, External. I also found people recommending "Blu-Tak" which is a mounting putty for putting posters on walls and the like. I have tested a couple varieties of that (Scotch makes one), and found it did no damage and left no residue, at least for short term application. (Some composers like to put it on strings for "prepared piano" effects).

Apologies, I should have led off with the link and saved us all some time.

Comparing this one, the internal putty, with the stuff  posted by Fred (external putty), it seems that external putty is safer to apply to finished soundboards.
