    Hello,

I would like to hear from anyone who has recent experience with either of these two makes and models. We are in the market for a grand in this general price range ($16-18k). In your experience how do these two compare? Which would you choose? I have more recent experience with the Hailun than the Essex. I like what I hear and feel with the Hailun 178.

We have a couple Essex 123 verticals (< 2 yr old) in practice rooms and they are pretty decent instruments, especially when compared to older Essex that were horrible. If their grands have made similar improvements, we might consider one.

    Thanks for any insights.

I'm not acquainted with the Hailun, but I have a 6 year old Essex 173 in my home that has seen many hours of use from my two younger kids, who are still at home, both playing at the RCM Grade 8 level.  I am very pleased with it.

    Alan,

For the past 2 years I have been servicing 2 Hailun 178's that are constantly shipped all over Israel for various concert and event rentals. They stand up well to the wear-and-tear, and one of them is the favorite piano of one of the well-known pop artists here. I like the sound and the touch on both.

I guess I should add to my previous reply that the pop artist who uses this Hailun 178 (sn 19583) for all his performances is a classically trained pianist who crossed over, his arrrangements are quite sophisticated and demandling of pianistic technique - besides being rather loud in places. So this Hailun has performed and survived quite well under demanding circumstances.
