Is anyone familiar Mehlin & Sons, vintage 1924.  Was this a well made piano?

    Thanks,

    David Weiss

    Hi David,

I restrung a Mehlin of about that vintage many years ago.  I remember being pretty impressed with it!  Too long ago to remember a lot of specifics but for a mid range piano it was put together well.

i have tuned both an upright grand and a viola grand Mehlin and was impressed with them. the upright grand actually has a grand piano plate in it as well as some other neat things to change the touch. the grand had a cut out in the soundboard and a cantilevered bridge as well as a slope in the plate. i have some good literature on their pianos so send me a private message. also- you did not mention if the 1924 was a vertical or grand . any pictures you have would be appreciated. i want to spend some time doing acoustical sampling on both pianos to see what influence the designs had on tone development, attack and decay as well as clarity. i had never seen a mehlin before and these two howed up in the same week

Mehlin and Sons  pianos that i have rebuilt were built like shrick bit houses. I have developed a nickname for Paul Mehlin, I have always thought of him as Mr. Patent.Pending.
In the grand i worked on, the beam structure had laminated beams and the inner rim and bellyrail was ash. pretty stout!!

I thought the soundboard had lost it's tone on this one, but the owner didn't want to spring for a new one. I thought the rib structure was too spaced apart too.
Overall Good bones (so to speak).
