    Greetings,
The piano is a S&S "M" # 395210 (1966). I did not notice this at first but C#4 is missing one of the trichord members. The coil was left on the tuning pin for visual purposes (i think). The hitch pin field has been all strung with one ugly plain string tied just inside the uppermost overstrung area. I see tied ends next to the tenor and treble struts that, if I recall correctly are normal for this scale so my eitb9WBTT1ihzCg1E4bH_2018-08-20 10.56.40.jpg pic3.jpgEPc0rE0TRISen8DePre3_0820181039b.jpg pic4.jpgrnw7BACVQjmFnB9qWwz8_2018-08-20 10.39.36.jpg pic2.jpgquestion is there must be another tied wire that was omitted and trouble became the installer when he ran out of hitch pins for C#4. Photos should accompany this message. Any answers or ideas where the single string in the scale should really belong.

    David,
There are only two single strings in the M scale:  D#5 Left, and G#6 Left.  What you have there is a makeshift repair of a broken string.  The center wire for C#4 should not attach to the hitch pin with a loop - it should continue around the hitch and become the left wire for C#4.

I don't see how I can complete that trichord for C#4 and be hitch pin correct for the ascending and descending wire scale.

I suppose my only visible option would be to single string the right on the hitch at the strut and use the 2nd hitch to complete the trichord. Not what the OEM had planned but it seems to be my only solution.

    Mr.Chadwick,

The wire scale shouldn't be an issue. On a model M there are #17 wires for several notes to either side of the note in question. Just take off the tied string and replace it with a conventional #17 going from the middle pin to the hitch pin and back to the left pin. Mute off the right string so your client doesn't have to listen to the new ones going out of tune for the first month or so.

Whoever made this repair probably did not know how to splice but was able to firm a loop.
