Frank Teupe Giraffe Piano
This Giraffe piano was built by Frank Teupe in Louisville, Kentucky in 1895. The Piano Technicians Guild Foundation has had this piano in its collection for many years, but it was purchased by us in 2013. Frank Teupe was born in Prussia in 1837 and opened his piano factory in Louisville in 1865. According to a 1946 Seattle Times news story, it is one of seven giraffe pianos built by Teupe. Later in 1896, Teupe patented improvements in building a piano soundboard and especially the supporting plate and beams for the structure. The piano is straight strung with hammers striking the strings from the back.
