    Hello all,

Just curious, but what do you use for crown voicing in upright pianos?

Specifically, I'm trying to find something for sugar coating upright hammers without having to remove or tilt back the action. Any suggestions?

I'd welcome any suggestions for other upright voicing tools as well. 😉 Thanks,

I got these voicing pliers about year ago and they work really really well. They're reasonably priced too.

Yes, I've been looking at the side voicing pliers for the last week or so. Does one use them in place of crown voicing (sugar coating)?

Yes, at least I have been using them that way. I've been shocked at the positive results. I still use a wire brush or good ol' needling but these are easier on the hands than needling, which is becoming very important to me as I get older.

I modified my SVP, one needle and a half-round to insert straight. There is a channel cut into the half-round for the neddle to enter when it is closed. A small seg, ment of player tubing hold it together.

The Bloduc tool is nice too and I find it useful sometimes to turn the needle line 90 °.  I'll modify the shank to keep the roller bearing aligned when doing so... one of these days.

    Ingenious as ever, Jon.

I like the thumb-sized voicing tool I got from Jurgen. I use it with one needle. It is very easy to use on upright hammers.

Looking at his website, I think I may try the ring tool as well.
