I have a harpsichordist friend who needs replacement jacks for a Sperhakke in Havana (she'll be going there in February). She says the original plastic is very brittle and breaking, and wondered if Zuckermanns would work. Can anyone answer that question for me?

BTW, http://www.harpsichordjacks.net makes wooden replacements, including Sperhakke, but she thinks the wood might not hold up well in Cuba. Any thoughts on that?

    Fred,

Search "harpsichord jack" on eBay.uk to find Hugh Craig generic jacks. They are overlong, and can be cut to fit. The body is 3.9 x 11mm. It will probably rattle a little in the jack rail, but can be made to work fairly well if you are clever and patient. My solution on a  1 x 8' lautenwerk conversion was to taper the dampers so that they push the jack to the side away from the string. Comparing two Sperrhakes, I found the jack rail slots were slightly different sized, so I would not expect a "just drop it in" replacement. Perhaps it would be less crucial with leather plectrum.

The jacks are made of a slick plastic, so you cannot size them with lacquer, as you can with wood or some plastics. You can apply strips of adhesive tape, but since the register on my conversion will not be moved on and off, the tapered damper was easier and more dependable.

    Fred,

Amy Taylor may be able to help. She is the daughter of the late Robert Taylor who was the importer for Sperhhake.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'll mention that http://www.harpsichordjacks.net makes wooden replacements of whatever dimension you need, and shows photos of some Sperhakke replacement jacks, but my friend didn't want wood, thinking tropical conditions might cause problems.

In the course of doing some research, I remembered I have two registers worth of older Zuckermann jacks (the white ones, same tongue but without the cross member to limit its bending) that are thicker than the modern ones (more or less 4 mm vs. 3 mm), and should work. I offered those, and she thinks they will be fine.

I'm not sure why Zuckermann went to such thin jacks. Pretty much everyone else has close to 4 mm thick jacks. Maybe they thought that for kits, this would ensure no hanging up in the registers, no need for filing regardless of climate. Too bad Instrument Workshop stopped offering jacks. Maybe the new owner will bring them back. It would be nice to have another plastic jack option, rectangular cross section throughout, possibility of a bottom screw. It's a pretty nice design, though I haven't actually worked with it (just purchased a few as replacement options to have on hand).

Hugh Craig makes some delrin jacks. I have a few I bought
for an older Zuckerman, thinking they'd work,
but they really are a bit too big and need
some custom fitting. I just needed the tongue
and see that I can get new snap in tongues for
the old Zuckerman white jacks right from Zuckerman.

Hugh Craig's website doesn't work for me, but
he is selling them on Ebay.
