Piano History

  • 1.  Friedrich Ehrbar (Austria, Wien) Grand 7 ft

    Greetings,

    a local theater company was given a Friedrich Ehrbar grand piano, 7 ft, by the historic society.  They thought it was going to be used regularly, but as it turns out, it has not been used at all but for perhaps once or twice in 10 years.
    They are thinking of either selling or donating it.  It is ready for a complete rebuild.
    Does this piano have any historic importance, and value?

    I cannot tell you anything about the historical significance of Ehrbar pianos but I have one experience to share. During my time at Ithaca College a smaller Ehrbar grand from the 1920's was donated to the school. It needed the works so I sent it to a rebuilding shop in NYC for a new soundboard, etc. and I reconditioned the action. It had warm and singing tone that I would compare to European pianos of that period. It went into a violin studio and the professor loved the piano.
