Young Chang pedal rod thingie

The piano, a Young Chang upright.  At the top of the pedal rod there is a white plastic insert with a little peg, that fits into the damper rail rubber grommet.  The insert has broken off flush with the end of the metal rod, so the sustain pedal is inoperable.  Two problems:
    - how to get the broken stub out (pressure fit)
    - where to get a replacement insert

    Thanks in advance!

    Zeno,
    Drill out the broken stub.
I use the plastic/nylon inserts that Yamaha uses.

    Zeno,

You can get those little things from Schaff Piano Supply.  Also from Yamaha.

    Jer,
Please share the part# and/or page in the Schaff catalog.

Well, my Schaff book is older and doesn't agree with the page numbers of a friend who has an updated version but, in mine, it is on page 120 in the Yamaha section of Schaff.  I'll name the parts too so you can look them up.  I believe these are the correct names for the parts Zeno is looking for...

    1. "Upright Pedal Rod Dowel Tip (TOP)" No. 3963.
    2. "Upright Pedal Rod Dowel Tip (BOTTOM)" No. 3864.

    Jer,
Unfortunately, there is no Yamaha section anymore in the latest Schaff catalog,
hence, those references numbers you gave are invalid.
Also, a search of the Schaff catalog online produced zero results
for both the name and part# you provided.

It's probably worth a free phone call to Schaff and/or Pianotek. Not absolutely everything is listed in either catalog.

I guess I would call Schaff, PianoTeksupply, Yamaha or Young Chang on Monday and see if one of them carries it.  I know Yamaha has too because they still install them in their pianos.

I guess my catalog is outdated.  :( I tried finding it online myself too but I can't and it is becoming to time consuming...  Sorry.. I tried...

Thanks Jerry.  I called them yesterday and was told they don't have it, and I hadn't noticed it in the catalog.  More calls to make on Monday.

    Enjoy the weekend!

That is, I called Schaff, and was told they didn't have it.  I'll call the others come Monday.

You may be able to get these from Young Chang.  Ask if you can get a few extra.  Drill out the insert for a screw and pulll it out, it's not that hard to do.  The action and damper lift rod has a very small radius when it swings, so lifter lever binds on the insert pin and tends to break it off.  You have to back off the pedal adjustment so it barely lifts the dampers, otherwise you'll be replacing it soon.  Don't ask...

These "Upright Pedal Rod Dowel Tip (TOP)" No. 3963 seem to regularly break. I have replaced many over the years. For one customer who was breaking them at a pretty fast rate, I actually replaced the entire rod with a wooden dowel (5/8" I think) with a steel pin on each end.

I just replaced another tip this morning and threatened to replace it with a wooden dowel too...but then I looked down at the damper lift lever. As the rod lifts the lever, the guide hole the pin goes through puts a bending pressure on the pin and plastic insert. As Paul (above) says, this is what apparently causes the "Upright Pedal Rod Dowel Tip (TOP)" No. 3963 to break. BTW, the pedal is already adjusted to minimum damper lift.

Possible solution: Simply elongate the hole in the lift lever (back to front). Has anyone tried this? I didn't have a small rat-tail file but next time, I will give it a try it.
