  • 1.  Music Wire Question or two

I am in the process of making a big switch from Mapes. After many errors ( with bass strings) and discussions with fellow tech friends, i am planning on switching over to Roslau music wire. I was always under the assumption that Roslau had a higher tensile strength than Mapes, but have been told that's not true. If Roslau has a lower tensile strength, that would be more to what I want. Does anyone know for sure? How much of a difference?

On the bass strings, I am going to be trying JD Grandt. Any feedback or review or tips on would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    -chris

I switched from Mapes a while ago as well.

I have used JD Grandt and have been very happy with him. He calls if he sees something in my scaling that he has questions about. As long as my measurements are correct...no mistakes.

Currently I use Heller in Germany, and am quite happy with him too. Shipping from Germany is amazingly, somthing like $25 for 2 day delivery. So one does not have to worry about shipping delays. In my last order, I blew my measurements on a couple of strings, and decided to scale a couple differently. He did the re-work for me the next day and express mailed it for something like a 3 day order to arrival. Both will make strings with Paullelo cores, which have the lower tensile strengths you mentioned. Only Heller has Paullelo soft iron wraps if you want that.

As far as BP% of Mapes vs Roslau...its anyone's guess. This is one of my big dissatisfaction with Mapes. They do not publish any BP #'s, and I doubt they even have them to publish.  So comparing the two is a best guess equivalence.

    Thanks Much Jim,
All i Have regarding comparing Roslau to Mapes is what a friend of mine said. He said that Roslau bends easier than Mapes. Does  that translate into lower tensile strength? i don't know.  When I get some Roslau, i'll break some strings and see what the difference if any is.
    Thanks again.

    Chris,

In my experience, the Roslau wire is more malleable than the Mapes wire and, perhaps as a result, seems to stabilize faster. (Sorry, I have no idea what that might mean in terms of tensile strength.)

The last couple of sets of Mapes bass strings I installed were several years ago. They were OK, but I sensed that there must be something better out there to be had. Since then, I have had very good experiences with both Heller and J. D. Grandt. I am told that G. C. is also top-drawer, and may try them next, just to see and hear for myself.

Rod Vernjak in Vancouver BC had a Steinway D that someone else rebuilt and placed the speaking length of note 88 somewhere around 56mm, (if I am remembering correctly) and it was strung with Roslau. The high treble strings kept breaking. Rod replaced the wire with Mapes and no more breaking.

And then of course there's Paulello wire that comes in soft, normal, and extra strong.

I have used Roslau wire almost exclusively for 28 years and never really had any problems with them.  I've used Mapes, generally for bass strings, but if I want to splurge, I'll use Arledge. They are excellent bass strings.

When we tested the breaking strengths of the then-new Mapes IG wire against traditional Roslau wire in the late 1980s we found Mapes IG wire to have a slightly higher tensile strength.

We did not consider the differences to be significant. In most cases the tensile strength of modern music wire is more than adequate. Indeed, the current trend is to use music wire formulated to deliberately lower tensile strengths for part of the scaling -- low tenor/tenor and mono-chord bass, for example.

I've never received a bad set of strings from JD Grandt. Ever.
