Hi folks. I don’t post much but enjoy your musings ! I thought I’d seen most things, but ran into these on a Steinway M. Quite a surprise. Foam punchings. Holding up pretty well it seems, I don’t know how long they’ve been there. Pretty mushy, I won’t be leaving them. Stop gap work while they raise funds for a new one. Have I been under a rock?!

Is the touch a little spongy ?  I had a kimball consolette where someone used the foam from egg cartons some of the punching where cut from craft felt the Piano had been in the family on a potatoe farm in Iowa and passed through the family had to remove a ton of fine potato dirt left some of the material in the piano the owner had a complete family tree on the piano one aunt was a crafter and probably made the punchings

I have a set on the shelf at the shop. A guy gave me a set, and wanted me to try them, maybe 10-15 years ago. These were a dense, springy foam, at least when new. He thought they improved key return. I would bet that he used them on the actions he rebuilt. I never did try them.  Easy enough to replace I guess.
