    For what it's worth:

Steinway & Sons buys Louis Renner
    30.07.2019 news newsletter

Steinway & Sons has announced the purchase of Louis Renner GmbH & Co. KG. Renner will continue to supply all manufacturers.

Steinway & Sons has been one of Renner's biggest customers for more than a century. Renner manufactures parts such as mechanisms, hammer heads, special parts and tools at the locations Gätringen and Meuselwitz. The fact that Renner is now part of the company makes Steinway & Sons proud and also sets an example for Germany as a manufacturer of pianos.

"We are very pleased that Renner is now part of our group of companies. Like us, the company has a very long tradition, is a leader in its segment, and delivers to customers worldwide with outstanding quality. We associate the same values. It is important that Renner continue to work independently, so the acquisition will only be positive for the company, its employees, and especially for the industry and its customers, "said Guido Zimmermann, President Steinway & Sons Hamburg.

Clemens von Arnim, managing director and former partner of Renner, is also thrilled with the acquisition by Steinway & Sons. Together with Sabine Manal (CFO), he will continue to run the business of Louis Renner, thus ensuring continuity. "For us it is important that we continue our production after the acquisition and continue to supply all piano manufacturers with the usual best quality. The fact that we were able to win over Steinway & Sons as a buyer for our family business makes me very happy and makes me look optimistically into the future, "says Clemens von Arnim, the great-grandson of one of Renner's founders.

Steinway & Sons guarantees the continued employment of all nearly 200 employees of the company Renner in Gärtringen near Stuttgart and Meuselwitz near Leipzig. Because not least for this reason, it is ensured that the industry is supplied with the usual excellent components for pianos and grand pianos.

With this acquisition, Steinway claims to include past strategic acquisitions, which also served to ensure that the piano industry can be supplied with critical components for the long term. These include the company Kluge GmbH in Remscheid as the largest European manufacturer of keyboards and the O.S. Kelly Company in Ohio, the largest US cast iron manufacturer. Steinway & Sons has also partnered with these companies for decades as a supplier and guarantees the supply of the piano manufacturers as usual.

Thanks for sharing that Karl. I hadn't heard that yet.

So, does this mean Renner parts will now qualify for "genuine Steinway" parts, as set forth in Steinway's new policy?

    Benjamin,

Your guess is as good anybody's. Probably depends on whether SS decides to play nice...or not. Time will tell.

I wonder if this is just the next step in consolidating Steinway in Germany and closing down the New York plant.

    Richard,
I wonder why you think this? I’m certainly no insider, but the NY factory is going strong, or so it seems.

Wouldn't this all hinge on the owners?

For sure, but since I've taken up residence under a rock for a while, can you tell me who owns Steinway?

    Hi David,
It's rather dubious that I might shed any light on your sub-lithic condition, as I have been observing something like stalactites growing in my own living room.
At any rate, that might be classified info.

    David,

    Who owns Steinway?

The short answer is hedge-fund owner John Paulson bought Steinway in 2013 for $512 million.

    Joe,

Just speculating. No proof, sorry. I just remember someone in some email some time ago in a galaxy far far away........

    Apologies

    Richard,
No apology necessary.  If they do stop NY production, they'll have to recall all of their plates for the past 166 years for inaccuracy!!

    Mr.Kiddell,

Though you're a technician from Edmonton your photo looks remarkably like the Jack Singer hall in Calgary n'est-ce pas?

That's our Winspear Centre here in Edmonton, admittedly built several years after Jack Singer, but a lovely space as well.

Also home to a pretty decent Letourneau pipe organ:

Well I guess that's one way to get rid of competition...the thousand dollar price differential, for one thing, and the way I could always find some combo of Renner parts that worked...

Smart move on their part. Rebuilds, etc big part of the piano business on Steinway pianos.  Gives them control on the parts, along with the profits.  Gives them a more solid financial base.
