Serviced a Steinway grand for a new-to-me client today. Trying to figure out what model it is. It measures about 6'2" and has a 20-note bass. The serial number and model are not stamped on the horn area between the bass and tenor where most Steinways have that. I'm guessing an A2 - can't think of anything else it could be. Anyone? Is there anywhere else that Steinway would put the serial number? This thing was restrung many years ago - and I suppose the plate was refinished (but darn, if it was, it was like 50+ years ago!). FWIW, the guy who owns this now many years ago traded two file cabinets and a desk for the piano!

6' 2" is probably an A, as you guessed. In my experience, when all else fails I usually can find the serial number stamped into the front of the keyframe, behind the keyslip. Don't confuse the serial number with the production number because both will be stamped there. You can tell the difference because the production number will be stamped all over the place on different parts. The serial number is not.

An A1 would be a three bridge piano so if it's a two bridge piano then it's an A2.  The A3 is 6'4"

At the back end of the string frame, at the pointed area beyond the bass strings are numbers cast into the frame of the date the frame was cast. The piano's manufacture completion was a year or two later. The serial number is also on the top of the lyre, back of keyslip, bottom of music desk, lid prop stick, cheek blocks.
