Maybe I should know what this is, but I don't!

Mostly used to hold leather nuts while removing or threading on...player piano work.

I can see that it's better for leather nuts than what it is sold to do: remove/install rubber grommets threaded onto stickers; It chews them up pretty good.

It was used to turn the wooden dowel on the end of the wire sticker of a drop action,to adjust lost motion.

I have no idea how that photograph got on page 37, but I’ll investigate and we will correct in the online version. The photo appears correctly on page 31, and as the caption below the photo states, the tool is put on a combination handle to grab and turn wood dowels used to regulate lost motion on some spinet pianos. It’s not intended for use on rubber or leather nuts, which it will indeed chew up.

Beg to differ. Used one for over a decade for leather nuts. When the hole is properly sized, this tool saves dried and split fingers when replacing hundreds of leather nuts with new ones. Never had any damage or shredding.

Right, wooden sticker adjustment. Still an awful tool. I haven't throw it out because there might be something useful for it on something or other. Certainly not for wooden sticker adjusting. Screw Pliers work best for that.

Despite nearly forty years experience, and having adjusted many a spinet's lost motion, I'm failing to recall any drop action with wooden dowels to adjust. What brand does anybody else recall which has these?

Wooden dowels atop wires typically show up on console actions where the action is somewhat above the keys but not so far as to require abstracts built into the action itself. In my experience, these have always had through holes drilled perpendicularly to the dowel's length to allow turning with a sharp pointy stick tool. Care of course needs to be taken to ensure not splitting dried out wood when turning. I would be very reluctant to use the 4-arm tool on any old wood dowel.

One can easily bend and modify the legs of the 4-arm tool to better grasp leather/rubber covered nuts, and not cause any damage.
